As interesting as the attractions is the speculation on how Las Cruces got its name. One legend traces the name back to 1830, when some travelers from Taos were attacked by Apaches. Many of the travelers were killed, and the survivors erected crosses in memoriam. Las Cruces is Spanish for "the crosses." Other stories attribute the name to the Spanish words cruce, meaning "crossroads."
